Choosing the Right Portable Loading Docks

Choosing the right portable loading docks for your warehouse needs can make all the difference in the world. At Dura-Ramp, we offer a wide range of portable loading ramp options, as well as loading ramp accessories that are designed to make your life easier.

Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Portable Loading Dock

Portable loading docks allow you to load and unload your cargo with ease at a considerably lower cost than installing a whole loading dock in your facility. While portable loading docks can increase efficiency in the workplace, it is important to know which type of loading dock will work best for your specific needs. There are a number of different aspects that you should consider when purchasing your portable loading dock, including:

Structural Features

First, it is important to identify which portable loading dock features will work best for your transporting needs. Portable loading docks can be equipped with many different features, such as a tow bar, self-supported capabilities, a hydraulic pump, a hand crank, handrails, surrogated grates, etc. By understanding your needs and uses, you will be able to narrow down the features that are most important to you.

Capacity

Next, consider the capacity needed for your portable loading dock to ensure the highest level of safety for your users. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your loading dock can withstand at least three times more weight than the forklift’s capacity. Find the listed capacity for your forklift in your user manual or on the right side of your seat or steering wheal.

Width

The width of the portable loading dock is another important variable. Not only do you need to ensure that the loading dock will fit the size of your door or truck, but you will need to consider the width of the equipment used on it and the turning radius needed. We recommend using a portable loading dock that is at least 15” wider than the largest piece of equipment you plan to use on it.

Length

Lastly, you will need to look at the length of your portable loading dock. Loading docks come in two main options: You have two options: straight loading docks and loading docks that levels off. A level-off loading dock provides you with added length at the upper end of the dock. This provides easier maneuverability and is particularly important for you if you are considering end loading or need roof clearance.
