What are Loading Dock Levellers?

When a truck backs up to a ramp or loading bay, the trailer is usually not perfectly level with the loading dock or ramp’s surface. This can create a dip or bump between the two surfaces, making it unsafe for forklifts and pallet jacks to transport cargo. A loading dock leveller helps to eliminate dips or bumps between the loading ramp and the truck trailer, creating a flat and level surface that is ideal for forklifts and pallet jacks. Loading dock levellers are available in many different configurations, allowing you to select the ideal solution for your loading ramp, equipment, and the materials/products you transport.

3 Types of Loading Dock Levellers for Your Loading Ramp

The following types of dock levellers are the most commonly used for portable loading ramps of various sizes:

1. Integrated Dock Levellers

Integrated dock levellers are one of the most efficient and safe ways to span the gap between a loading ramp and a truck. These units utilize a hydraulic system to lift and extend a flat platform for forklifts and pallet jacks. These dock levellers also include rubber bumpers for the truck to back up against to create a tight connection while minimizing the risk of damage to the ramp or truck trailer.

2. Transition Plates

Transition plates are a simple and effective way to connect a truck to a loading ramp. These units consist of heavy-duty metal plates that are attached to the loading dock by hinges. Transition plates operate by having the truck or other vehicle line up a cargo deck with the platform, and then the plates simply drop into place to span the gap between the ramp and deck. While these units are fast and easy to use, they can sometimes create a steep incline if the gap between the ramp and trailer is too large. This should always be noted by operators before transporting loads between each surface.

3. The Electric Easy Lift

The Electric Easy-Lift is an electric motor that moves the entire surface of the portable loading dock up and down as needed. While not a dock leveller by itself, this system can be used with other loading dock levellers to change the height of the ramp and create a completely level surface between the top of the ramp and the truck trailer, increasing safety and efficiency.
