Warehouse Safety Tips

Making sure that your warehouse is a safe work environment is extremely important. At Dura-Ramp, we want to make sure that everyone is provided with the safest work environment possible. That is why we have come up with a list of simple warehouse safety tips that can help you ensure that your warehouse is a safe workspace.

Loading Docks

Loading docks have a huge role in the day-to-day functions of a warehouse, and there are many ways that you can make sure that your loading docks remain a safe place to work, including:

  • Remove objects one at a time from shelves.
  • Place heavier loads on the lower or middle shelves.
  • Push or carry objects out the way, rather than kicking them.
  • Make sure to remove any sharp objects (nails, staples, etc.) when unpacking crates.
  • Avoid having overhanging objects from shelves into walkways.
  • Do not cut shrink wrap in front of your eyes or your co-workers.

Hand Truck Operations

Loading hand trucks can be potentially dangerous, as loads must be placed in a way that prevents them from falling or slipping. It is also important to make sure that when loading a hand truck you always place the heavier loads underneath the lighter ones, and that the tongue of the hand truck is all the way under the load for optimal support. The position in which the load is being pushed is also important. You should always make sure that the axle, not the handles, is carrying the weight of the load.

When transporting your load, you should try to avoid blind corners, but, if one cannot be avoided, you should have a spotter guide you around the corner. Once you are finished using the hand truck, be sure to store it so that the tongue is under a shelf, pallet, or table.

Lift Table Use

Lift tables, if used properly, can increase the safety of your employees by making it easier for them to transport heavy loads, and by positioning product in a more ergonomically correct way. Lift tables should only be manoeuvred by certified operators, and should never exceed the manufacturer’s load rated capacity.

Forklift Safety

Proper forklift safety begins with making sure that all of your forklift operators are adequately trained and certified for using lift equipment. This will reduce the risk of injury and damages to the equipment and products. The forklift should also be inspected at the end of each day and maintained regularly to ensure the safety of your employees.

Material Storage

To improve productivity and safety, you should make sure that all loads are placed directly on the racking, as straight and evenly as possible. You should also make sure that the heavier loads are kept on lower shelves, and that the aisles and passageways around the shelving are kept clear. It is also very important that pallets are inspected as they arrive at the warehouse, and that any pallets in poor condition are removed.
